A Commitment to Anti-Racism

Since the murder of George Floyd by police on May 25, rallies, marches, actions, and demonstrations have been taking place non-stop around the world. I have had the honor to join in these protests for Black lives in my own city, and have had my own feelings of inspiration, and sometimes shame about not being more vocal or involved in the past. Why does it always take the death of a Black person for people, myself included, to finally get off the bleachers and join the fight for social and racial equity?

Unfortunately, there have been too many of these devastating opportunities to speak out: the police killings of Philando Castile, Michael Brown, Alton Sterling, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Breonna Taylor, and many, many others, not to mention the often underreported accounts of murdered Black transgender women.

Whatever my reasons were for not using my social media platforms to raise awareness about these issues, fear of “not doing it right” or whatever, truly disturb me. I am ashamed, and deeply sorry. It’s not enough for me to have a radical/progressive, queer and trans-informed background. I pledge to use the resources, privileges, and abilities I have to be actively anti-racist, to donate money, educate myself, listen, learn, and speak up. Btw, I’ll probably mess up too. I always welcome feedback or input on how I can do better.

I also want to seek out and amplify Black writers. It occurred to me that I’ve been a self-employed freelance writer for over a year. I’ve learned so many lessons, one of the greatest has been the ongoing journey of financial healing. I am by no means an expert in the freelance hustle, nor an editor, but I am always down to share whatever I know to help or mentor Black writers. Reach out if this is you, and you think I could help!

I am making a long-term commitment to social and political activism in new ways. Will you join me? Even if it’s just putting a note on your calendar to do one thing a month: make a donation, sign a petition, email a representative, read a book, volunteer an hour of your time, etc. I’ll be reposting actionable info on my Instagram stories.

I am excited about joining this movement right now, and for the continued, sustained work that needs to be done.
